Hello and happy new year everyone! Can’t believe we’re in January already, Christmas and all the hype is over and I’m back to work tomorrow! Wish me luck!
So anyway, I’m aware that I’ve never really included very personal details about myself on my blog. I decided to do the Mental Health Tag by Anxiously Me so that you might get to know me and my mental health a little better.
So… here we go!
1. What is your mental health issue?
I have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, depression and Bulimia. However, I have worked on this and I now consider myself mostly recovered, with the odd blip now and then. I still experience anxiety almost daily BUT I no longer consider myself to be depressed. And I have been in recovery from my eating disorder for almost two years now.
2. Do you have medication and/or therapy?
Yes, I take medication for my anxiety. The medication mostly regulates my mood and helps to keep me on an even keel. I no longer go to therapy regularly, but I always make an appointment with my therapist whenever I feel like I need it.
3. What therapy/medication have you tried and has any worked for you?
I have been in and out of therapy for the last 5 years or so. The therapy that most worked for me was CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). It is basically working on your mental health issues by changing how you think and act. I have tried many different medications over the years, some of which gave me different side effects, and so I had to switch.
4. How long have you had problems for?
For as long as I can remember really! But I’d say everything came to a head about 5 years ago, which was when I started therapy and medication.
5. Do your family/friends know?
Yes. My family and friends have been really there for me throughout all of my issues, and I am so grateful for them.
6. Does this affect your work and daily living?
It used to. But now I’ve learned to manage it. I did take about 6 months off from work while working on my depression and eating disorder through intensive therapy, but I haven’t taken a sick day for my mental health in about 6 months now! So that’s great!
7. What makes you feel calm?
Talking to my friends and family. Journalling. Listening to calm music or soundscapes. Reading and listening to the rain.
8. What do you do in crisis?
I usually use my grounding techniques, the 5,4,3,2,1 method or other. I also will make sure to talk to someone. Sometimes I literally just cry, and then I let it all out and things start to feel better.
9. What advice would you give to others suffering?
Definitely don’t be afraid to be open about your mental health. Its amazing the support and understanding you’ll get from other people. Also, talk to your doctor. If I hadn’t sought professional help I would be in a much different place in my life right now. Sometimes you just need validation that what you’re feeling is real.
10. What makes you smile?
My boyfriend. He can always make me laugh. Also, my little dog Pippa! She is always doing ridiculous things which makes me laugh.
11. Describe your mental health issue in 5 words –
Tough. Illuminating. Lonely. Normal. Confusing.

I don’t know whose puppy this is, but how cute that he’s pug-ception!
